The name, first

Two unrelated things share this phrase, and mixing them up is the most common mistake people make about this niche.

One is a historical claim about punishment, widely repeated and poorly sourced. The other is a genre label adults use for content they write and agree to. Only the second one is what this page lists. The community uses the phrase roughly the way film uses thriller: it sets an expectation about intensity and structure, and it describes nobody's actual circumstances.

What the genre actually involves

Length. This is the defining variable. An ordinary tickling clip runs a few minutes; work in this category runs long, and the running time is the product rather than a specification.

Escalation. Feathers to brushes to fingernails to an electric toothbrush, usually in a stated order. The escalation is the structure of the scene.

Restraint, almost always. Without it the reflex simply removes her from reach. Stocks are the signature, and most creators here also appear under restrained.

A frame. Frequently an interrogation: information withheld, a question repeated. The frame exists to justify the duration and give her something to play against.

Interrogation scenes

The scenario version of the same genre, and a small corner of it. A question is asked, an answer is withheld, and the tickling is the pressure. It suits creators who can act, because the frame falls apart without a performance to hang on it. The names under that heading below are the ones who work this way deliberately.

Look for a stated duration, a described escalation, and any mention of how the scene ends. Under sustained tickling speech is unreliable, so serious creators use a held object or an agreed count rather than a spoken word, and the ones who say so have thought about it.

A creator who agrees to absolutely everything has not.
